With the publishing of the revised Cypher System Rulebook, there are more options than ever for your Cypher characters out there. The types (the “noun” in your character’s sentence) might change from Numenera to The Strange to generic Cypher, but the descriptors and foci are usable everywhere. I’ve been psyched to see these options grow and so to start off the new year I’m bringing you a comprehensive list of descriptors and foci through the revised rulebook. Since writing about the new Numenera core books, Discovery and Destiny that one (in three parts), I’ve been mulling over the extra options that were added to the Ninth World. Do they work? How have campaigns shifted? What are people playing now? After my recent review of Building Tomorrow I was talking with a friend and decided to try and get a handle on that. Behold! A survey!
With the release of the new “edition” (I think it doesn’t exactly count but ymmv) of Numenera and the twin rulebooks of Discovery and Destiny, the Ninth World has been headed in new directions. Among these really exciting options are numenera crafting and community building which enrich the possibilities for your Numenera campaign. The latest Numenera release, Building Tomorrow, promises to build on those possibilities. The reasoning behind it is they “had more to say” on these topics and boy do they!
The last articles covered a lot of ground and in particular detail but it really just covered Parts 1 and 2 of Numenera Destiny. The book promises to expand options and flavor in your Numenera campaign and this is where we take a look at all that. Come with me into the heady world of building a settlement a billion years in the future!
Last time I talked about Numenera Destiny, it was a lot of information all at once: lists of descriptors and foci, details on the arkus’s abilities, etc. This was of necessity but today I’m happy to dig a little deeper into a specific aspect of this new vision for Numenera: the wright, the delve, and how to salvage and craft numenera devices.
As I mentioned last time, the new Numenera core books are split into two separate volumes. If you want the newest and latest you can get Nuemenera Discovery (the one I covered last time) and keep going with the Numenera game you know and love. If you’d rather not get a new version of the game and/or you want to check out the expanded options then you’ll need Numenera Destiny. Today we’re starting a dive into that and, in contrast to the simple rules and straightforward intention, it’s going to take some time to get through everything!
Back when I was contributing to Castles & Cooks, I reviewed the original Numenera game in one of my first big book reviews. It will surprise no one that my interest in Cypher remains, so when Monte Cook Games announced an update of the Numenera core books I eagerly signed up. As they recently announced they sent copies out to backers so you guys are in for a shiny new review!

This is my first real attempt at a video like this and I can already tell that I have a lot to learn… Still, people have been asking about The Ninth World: A Skillbuilding Game for Numenera and the content here is just fine. Jade Colossus: Ruins of the Prior Worlds is the latest supplement for Numenera published by Monte Cook Games. It’s a different sort of game supplement, at least in part. The titular location, the Jade Colossus, is one big dungeon delve which is a very important addition to the game line as Monte Cook Games itself has published many of those for Numenera. The other part of the book, though, is what I’m more interested in: an engine for generating ruins from previous worlds. Come for a quick run-down of what each part is like.
