My Little Pony: A New Generation

In case you don’t follow kids media like me and all the other parents in lockdown, you might have missed that there’s a new My Little Pony movie out! Netflix launched My Little Pony: A New Generation last month and my kiddos won’t stop talking about it. Since they also like the Tails of Equestria RPG I thought I’d take some time to create the characters of this new film for your home game and mine.

The setting for A New Generation is, unsurprisingly, a future time after the events of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic period that is the setting of the Tails of Equestria RPG. While Hasbro has used its ownership of both properties to produce a collection of D&D and My Little Pony toys, I don’t expect to see an official New Generation supplement or any further RPGs soon. There was a new one mentioned last year using the D&D 5e ruleset but I haven’t heard anything since. All of this means that fans like me just have to fill in the gaps!

No Spoilers

Well, some spoilers. I’m going to try to skirt the line here but if you are strictly opposed to learning anything about the movie then you’re just going to have to watch the movie first. Here’s the blurb from Netflix to get us started:

Equestria’s divided. But a bright-eyed hero believes Earth Ponies, Pegasi and Unicorns should be pals – and, hoof to heart, she’s determined to prove it.

My Little Pony: A New Generation

In a nutshell, after the Mane Six of the show brought everyone together something caused xenophobia and anger to divide all the types of ponies from each other. The movie focuses on an Earth Pony who wants to see things return to how it used to be (the movie opens with her playing with Mane Six figurines and trying to convince her friends). On top of this (and, to the shock of no one, having to do with it) magic has also disappeared from the land so that the Pegasi and Unicorns lose their powers. If you want to play in this period, just remove any Talents that have to do with magical abilities and replace them with non-magical ones.

I’m going to create characters assuming that it’s after the return of magic, though. I’m also going to create these characters at Level 2 since they have some experience now. This will let you play the characters right out of the events of the movie if you want, either alongside as these heroic ponies or alongside them exploring how Equestria changes with their actions.

Sunny Starscout

The star of the movie (voiced by Vanessa Hudgens) is an Earth Pony who has grown up learning about her father’s research into the past when all the ponies got along. Most ponies don’t believe her but she’s determined to show them all the truth and reunite ponykind.

To pay the bills, Sunny sells snowcones along the boardwalk in her home of Maretime Bay. She lives in the same Lighthouse that her father worked in and has access to all of his research which she uses to rediscover the links that have separated the three types of ponies.

Talents: Keen Knowledge (Magic Knowledge) d8, Special Skill (Diplomacy) d4, Stout Heart d8

Element of Harmony: Magic

Quirks: Overconfident

If you’ve watched the movie, you’ll see that there’s certainly a big part of Sunny’s character that’s missing here. I’ll leave it to you if you want to make all the changes that happen to Sunny (add at least one more Talent at d6), and might come back to do a final version in a future post.

Izzy Moonstone

The first friend that Sunny makes who isn’t an Earth Pony is the bouncy and funny Izzy (voiced by Kimiko Glenn). Though she doesn’t know about magic, Izzy certainly knows about friendship and she proves to be the fun-loving heart of the group of ponies that comes together to help reunite Equestria.

Izzy is an expert crafter and inventor, building impressive and beautiful devices for her home in Bridlewood. She is a great blend of art and engineering and a really awesome character.

Body: d6 | Mind: d6 | Charm: d6 | Stamina: 12 | Level: 2

Talents: Creative Flair (Fashion) d8, Special Skill (Invention) d8, Telekinesis d4

Element of Harmony: Laughter

Quirks: Oooohhh… Shiny!

Hitch Trailblazer

One of Sunny’s childhood friends, Hitch (voiced by James Marsden) grew up to become sheriff of Maretime Bay. In that role he comes up against his friend as Sunny tries again and again to disrupt public events to petition and raise awareness of tolerance for non-Earth Ponies. Eventually Sunny leaves Maretime Bay and Hitch chases after the “fugitive” but starts to question his beliefs as he does.

Hitch is a rule-follower. This isn’t a bad thing in itself (better than selfishly causing trouble for everypony else), but sometimes it gets to his head. He lets his job and the letter of the law get in the way of his friendship with Sunny and that’s a lesson he really needs to work on.

Body: d8 | Mind: d6 | Charm: d6 | Stamina: 14 | Level: 2

Talents: Speak with Animals d8, Special Skill (Tracking) d4, Stout Heart d8

Element of Harmony: Loyalty

Quirks: Obsessed With Rules

Pipp Petals

A princess of the Pegasi, Pipp (voiced by Sofia Carson) is a superstar celebrity in her hometown of Zephyr Heights. She’s royalty but also a singer and dancer who is all over the video billboards and ponies’ smartphones. When Sunny comes to the city with her outlandish ideas of tolerance, Pipp isn’t immediately onboard but she comes to prove that she has a good heart and is willing to see the good in others.

As a celebrity, Princess Pipp has a flair for the dramatic and a love of the spotlight that can border on narcissism. She’ll put that aside for friends but she’s got a long way to go before she’s truly a selfless friend.

Body: d6 | Mind: d6 | Charm: d6 | Stamina: 12 | Level: 2

Talents: Creative Flair (Music) d8, Fly d4, Special Skill (Dancing) d8

Element of Harmony: Kindness

Quirks: Mememememe!

Zipp Storm

As Pipp’s older sister, Zipp (voiced by Liza Koshy) is less keen on the drama of royal life and more into adventure and fun. She’s a spiritual successor to Rainbow Dash (same hairstyle too) but balances her athletic and tough side with a love for science topics and an introspective personality.

Zipp is brave enough to take risks, both at home and with her new friends, and isn’t afraid to call out other ponies when they’re being selfish. In this, she’s also the spiritual successor to Applejack so she makes a great force pushing her friends forward and keeping them grounded at the same time.

Body: d6 | Mind: d6 | Charm: d6 | Stamina: 12 | Level: 2

Talents: Fly d6, Keen Knowledge (Science) d6, Special Skill (Climbing) d8

Element of Harmony: Honesty

Quirks: Blunt
