The upcoming Fate game, A Far Off Land is a modern take on fairy tales with characters spanning both the magical world and the mundane. This is similar to games like City of Mist and Bloodlines & Black Magic but it hits that nice sweet spot that so many Fate games do. It’s straightforward and accessible for an alternative jaunt but rich enough for a deep campaign if you want to go that route. A Far Off Land is available right now as a pre-order on DriveThru RPG and us Kickstarter backers have already gotten our copies, but I’ve got a sneak preview for all of you right now with the book’s talented author, Megan Bennett-Burks.
Since it was released, Star Trek Adventures seen a number of different supplements. Once again, I’m
shamelessly stealing drawing inspiration from Little Mephling for some RPG outlet. We’ve been starting on the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, one of my favorite set of books from when I was little. It’s an enchanting story, an action-packed adventure, and a richly-built world with lots of different cultures and histories. Needless to say, it’s a goldmine in terms of roleplaying.
I’ve posted before about random tables for generating star systems in Dark Horizon: first on political systems and then on political stances. These are all part of a long section for creating compelling systems on the fly which provides one hundred different hooks for a star system. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, though.
Hot on the heels of SIGMATA, I’ve taken some time to look through the new game from Evil Hat Productions: Uprising. I’ve actually had this one for a little bit (I was one of the Kickstarter backers) but the actual street date for its release is today so I’ve been waiting to review. Uprising is a darkly-themed game of resistance, betrayal, and hardship, set in the same universe as The Resistance, Coup, and Coup: Rebellion, collectively called the “Dystopian Universe” which really doesn’t seem like a term you can claim as your own thing. Regardless, it’s a very attractive-looking book but does it live up to that potential? Read on and see.
I’m back with more City of Mist inspiration! Here’s another member of Alexis Liddel‘s crew, the book-loving veterinary student Anna Rose. I have to say that hiding little Easter eggs is a big part of the fun in making these characters. Sometimes they’re super-obvious and surely you’ll find some of those here. I wasted a lot of time covering my tracks on some, though, so if anyone can tell me why Anna’s father’s hospital is named “St. Vedast’s” or why her father left her a prototype energy core then you get ten Mephit points (redeemable at your local Mephit James Sandwich Emporium).
Another Star Trek Adventures book has hit the digital shelf for those with the PDF Collection and I immediately started flipping through it. I loved the Command Supplement and was eager to see what was in store this time. There was a high level of quality to meet and… Well, let’s just get into it.
Here is the first of my City of Mist characters for the game I outlined last time. I’ve decided not to do a walkthrough of how I created this character but let me sum it up by saying that this process (in true PbtA fashion) is so fun. It is pretty much a storytelling session where you make up a genius character complete with powers, allies, foes, faults, and a life outside of being a living legend. So great.
